Lecture "From
zines to Acazines and the HYP Winepunk project" 60 minutes + Q&A
Theme: HYP is an
uchronistic encyclopaedia in which we imagine how advanced green
biotechnologies could have changed the face of Europe in the late 1910s. For
example, the Northern monarchy in Portugal would have used port wine to gain
partial control over the Lisbon republicans (the revolt would then have lasted
4 years instead of 3 weeks); in Iceland, cod liver oil would have been used to
gain autonomy from the Danish crown in 1918 instead of 1944, and so on. This
fiction allows us to reconsider separatism, nationalism and centripetal forces
across Europe under the aegis of the ‘What if...’ scenarios mobilised in
alternate history. For this workshop, we suggest to develop some uchronies
based in Central and Eastern Europe during the period 1918-1922. Contributions
might be text, drawing, pictures, etc. based on historic facts. Or not.
